Alzheimer’s robs both the patient and the family of their memories, and often of the happiness that holds relationships together. As it may befall our elders, who have cared for us when we were young and vulnerable, that they become victims of memory loss, it is a good deed and an obligation (in Hebrew, a mitzvah) to Kibud av va’em—to honor one's parents.
As many scholarly articles and scientific studies have shown, music has the unique ability to penetrate the mind of the listener and to reach his or her emotions. Kibud has been created to bring together medical professionals, families, and musicians to sweeten the lives of Alzheimer’s patients with music, and to establish routes of communication through music between patients and their families.
Cantor Erica (Riki) Lippitz founded Kibud to advance the growing recognition about the role of music in reaching those struck down with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
Drawing from her more than 40 years as a Jewish musician and spiritual leader, Riki has created Kibud to develop music programs that aid in the communication with, and comfort of, elders suffering from memory loss.
